Question:

Computer won't defragment!?

Here's the basics:

Whenever I ask my cpu 2 defragment it says that is has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on volume (C:), please run chkdsk /f. So I go to the command line, and I tell it to run chkdsk /f, and it says cannot unlock current drive, the file system is NTFS. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process, and i schedule for the volume 2 be checked next time windows restarts. The cpu restarts but when I chkdsk again, it keeps on telling me the same thing. Help please !

  1. Try to boot in safemode and run it from there.

You can boot ian a command prompt on Windows Vista ...forgot it that is also the case in XP.

  2. Ok first off a CPU doesn't defrag it's the Hard Drive (HDD) that defrags. The whole point of a defrag is to re-organise the data that has been moved. It's a bit like tidying your room !

chkdsk /f will run on F drive and if it is in use it should ask to do it the next time you reboot?

To defrag: Right click on C: > Properties > Tools > Defragment

  3. Hmm, I want to ask..are you the administrator of the computer? Also, try to do it all again, then go to start/controlpanel/admintools/computerma... viewer. Scroll through each log file and see if you cna find an error involving this. either try and google it, or reply to me and ill see how i can help.

  4. CHKDSK is something that you can only run while in DOS not logged into Windows.

Each computer is different to get to the DOS command prompt when booting.

  5. your best bet would be to get third party software that has a defrag program included like , norton system works or system mechanic or acronis they have a much better defragment than  windows dose and gives a report as to what was moved how many files were fragmented how many are still fragmented.plus windows just defags the files but leaves them all over the drive these other programs will pack them all to one end of the drive witch helps you write speed on the drive plus cuts down on future fragmentation. but without knowing what os your running 98,xp,vista its hard to tell you whats running thats stoping you from using you windows defrag .try looking at the event log under admin tools in control panel and look for errors and see if you can fix a few of them by goggling the event codes

  6. Windows defrag tool is weak at best.  Use this...

    http://www.powerdefrag.com

  7. re boot the PC,

hold down the f8 key, select command prompt then tupe chkdsk.

and you should be all set to defrag when it is done.
