My friend has an E Machines t1116 that has Windows XP sp1 installed. He asked me to look at it because he is unable to connect to the internet. I hooked the computer up to my internet connection, which is a broadband LAN but the internet still wont work. I have checked the network connection and it is showing an IP address, subnet mask, and when you run ipconfig it shows auto config ip address, and subnet mask but no DNS suffix, or default gateway. The computer says the LAN is connected at 100 mbps. But still no internet connection. Does anyone have any ideas?

You are not required to logon to use this network. It is the type of connections that is always on. It is the most baffling thing. I have three computers, two desk top, and one laptop, and all of them connect to the internet just fine. Just not this old e machines. The computer is picking up the connection, but not allowing you to get on the internet. The computer says it is connected at 100mbps, but when you try and ping yahoo.com the request is timed out.

It is not the internet connection, as I have already stated, my other computers use this connection just fine, but there is something wrong with this e machines that is causing it not to pick up the connection like it should. Please does any one have any suggestions to resolve this?

  1. Try uninstalling the network adapter in device manager and restarting.  When windows restarts it will detect and reinstall the driver and protocols.  If this does not work try the network setup wizard.  I would also suggest that you update the operating system as improvements an updates may resolve the problem xp is now on sp3.  If necessary you can download the service pack installer on another pc and copy it to the old one.

  2. First, try a different ethernet cable.

Second, try setting the IP address, subnet and gateway manually.  If you need a set of DNS, use the generic sprint dns at 204.117.214.10 and 199.2.252.10.  You should already have a good idea what the IP and gateway will be.

If the computer was on during a lightning storm, it could be the port/NIC.

  3. Well there are several things that can cause the issue you describe. All the above are good starts. You should check the drivers etc. However, there are many things within the XP Winsock which can also cause these errors. Here would be where I would start.

    1. What happens when you go to a command line ( start --> run --> cmd)

and type  ipconfig /renew   this is the renew command for the DHCP in the machine. It is what gets the IP, Gateway and DNS information from the router.  If you get an error, what is the error? If no error returns and all the items are shown, IP Gateway and DNS try the ping again.

    2. If that fails, what happens when you ping by IP?  Instead of Yahoo.com ping 206.190.60.37  does it work?  Try pinging the routers IP like  ping 192.168.1.1  or whatever the "gateway" is supposed to be.

It that doesn't work check this article.on fixing WinSock errors

    3. Has the computer been completely scanned for MalWare, Adware, Viruses.. these can and do cause major networking issues. Use an online scanner  like trend micro  http://housecall.trendmicro.com or use the System Cleaner that they have, you can download that on another machine and run it off a CD copy.

You may find the netsh command of big help here. It shows lots of information - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/242468

You have some issues and it may be as easy as reinstalling the drivers.. or may be you need to repair XP -- or get rid of the malware.

  4. if you re-read your question , your answer is right in front of you !!

first your lan connection is 100mbs not your internet just so you know

the reason why your not connecting to the internet is simple !!

you have NO GATEWAY SET  thus the router has no way to send the information to the client

since your seeing a ip that tells me 1 of 2 things

#1 a static LAN ip is set in the tcpip settings of the nic card

    and no gateway is set

#2 the old dns has not been flushed

either way you need to either set the gateway manually or allow the dhcp client do it .. need more help MESSENGER me

  5. Try re-installing the networking drivers, which should be available on e-machines' website http://www.emachines.com/support/product...
