im running windows xp sp2 and when i click shut down the only thing that happens is the 'shut down windows' window goes away. whats wrong and how can i fix it?

  1. Try killing the explorer process. CTRL+ALT+DEL, click the "Processes" tab, find "explorer.exe", select it, press DEL, and select "Yes". Then click back to the "Applications" tab and find the button that says "New Task...". Type "explorer.exe" and hit enter. (This will bring the windows bar back up again, etc.) Then try shutting down again.

    If all else fails, exit/save everything and unplug. My computer does this occasionally too. Unless it does this every time you try to shut down, I wouldn't worry about it too much.


  2. could be a lot of things..... Do a system restore to an earlier time where this did not occur....

    but if you really need the computer off.... just hold the switch for 10 seconds
