when i plug headphones in audio jack sound doesnt come out of them,how can i get them to work

Firstly, check that you are plugging the headphones into the headphone socket and not the "line out" socket.  The "line out" socket is for speakers.

Secondly (if you are using Windows) double click the loudspeaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen (or go to Control Panel, Sound and audio properties, volume tab, then the button that's possibly called "other" or something), and check that all the scroll things are at the top and that nothing is muted.
