Compuware NHL Premiere Series 2010: Tampa Bay Lightning bags 2nd consecutive win defeating Philadelphia Flyers 3-2
The Philadelphia Flyers hosted Tampa Bay Lightning this Thursday, 14th October 2010 at the Wells Fargo Centre. It was the 42nd game of 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series.
Tampa Bay Lightning were playing their 3rd while Philadelphia Flyers their 4th game of the campaign. The match proved to be a hard and tough contest which saw Philadelphia Flyers emerge victorious in the end with 3-2.
1st Period:
Both teams came up with some good play early on but neither of them wanted to take the chance of making an attack so soon. Each team waited for the opposition to make a mistake so that it could be punished with a goal.
Then, Tampa Bay Lightning changed their strategy and with the players like Steven Stamkos on their side, they scored in the 16th minute through Stamkos via a brilliant wrist off from 6 feet. This put Lightning in the lead.
The home team, backed by most of the 20,000 spectators, didn’t want Lightning to increase their lead so they started to get strong on the offence. Displaying quality and precision while developing attacks, the Flyers managed to score in the 18th
minute to level things.
Their goal-scorer was Nikolay Zherdev, who scored from 7 feet through a tip in. The period ended on the same score as both teams went into the break all tied.
During the period, Lightning scored one goal out of 4 goal attempts that they made while Flyers also scored once out of their 14 attempts.
2nd Period:
The 2nd period saw the game turn into a defence dominated 20 minutes, where some strong and impressive plays were seen at the backline. Neither of the teams found their way easily near the opposing goal.
Both teams lost possession regularly and it wasn't until the 15th minute of the period that Lightning was able to punish the Flyers for their disastrous mistake. The defence handed the puck straight to Dominic Moore, who scored from 6 feet to
put the away team in the lead with 2-1.
Rest of the period didn’t see further goals and there weren’t any potentially dangerous attacks either as both teams continued with their non-porous defences. The 2nd period ended with Lightning in the lead at 2-1. Lightning and Flyers both tried 8 goal
attempts each.
3rd Period:
The last period provided some good entertainment as 2 more goals were scored in those final 20 minutes.
Lighting, with their constant hard work and attacks, scored in the 2nd minute of the period to establish a two goals lead in the match at 3-1. This goal was scored by Pavel Kubina from an excellent 61 feet strike.
The home team pulled one back in the 10th minute to take the score to 3-2. The goal-scorer was Danny Briere, who hit a superb shot from 20 feet. Finally, the match ended with the same score as Tampa Bay Lightning won by 3-2.
In the last period, Lightning scored once out of their 11 goal attempts while Flyers also scored once out of the 4 shots that they made.
Steven Gagne, the left-wingman for Lightning, was named the 1st star selection of the match. Later Gagne said, "The first 20 minutes were really hard and I was tearing up but I was up for the faceoff, anyway. So, I thought it was a good time to
do it."
