Question:

Concerning NAVY PS A-school?

Wife is graduating boot camp next week. Then off to A-school. My A-school was self paced, and i was told that "that's the way the navy is going now." three years ago. Is PS school self paced? And, lay it on me, I've never been stationed on a ship. I was a corpsman/psych tech. What's the likely hood of her first duty station being on a ship? I'm not active duty anymore, so that doesnt factor into it. Alot of people dont know what they're talking about. I've heard PS's are on ships less and less now, and i've heard PS's are have shore duty less and less. What's the word? (I see this being her first and last enlistment, so promotion isn't a big concern)

  1. I'm not sure about the self-paced A-school for PS's, although I've heard that's the case.

As for detailing/orders.  They are trying to consolidate to have PSDs at each base with a very small number of PSs onboard the ship, if any.  Those who will be on a ship are usually fairly senior also... the occasional E-5 but mostly E-6, E-7.  I would expect that her first duty station will be shoreside, at a PSD on one of the bases.  On my ship (DDG), we have a PSC and PS1.  Obviously big-deck amphibs / carriers will have more, but the Navy is actively trying to consolidate and bring more back to shore-side commands/PSDs to streamline the process.

  2. most shore duty for PS has gone to civilian contractors.  she can expect Sea duty or squadron duty.

and some ratings that went self paced have reverted back to classroom instruction( HM is one example)

  3. Well they consolidated the PN and YN rates and made PS a few years back.  SHe will most likely be shipboard her first tour, either as ships company or support.....

As far as school being self paced...not sure....
