Question:

Concerns From A Son?

My mother is 20 weeks pregnant & I have a lot of concerns.. She is taking xanax, methadone, & now antibiotics as well. All of which were prescribed by her doctor, who doesn't know she's pregnant. Its a long story!

But she is growing, the baby is moving, she has been to a sonogram tech where they did the first ultrasound & everything seems okay.. I guess my question is, will the pills she's taking effect the baby? I'm absolutely terrified!

  1. She needs to be upfront with her doctor, and tell them that she is pregnant, she's endangering her child and not being a responsible parent.

XANAX: Benzodiazepines can potentially cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women. If XANAX is used during pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while taking this drug, the patient should be apprised of the potential hazard to the fetus. Because of experience with other members of the benzodiazepine class, XANAX is assumed to be capable of causing an increased risk of congenital abnormalities when administered to a pregnant woman during the first trimester. Because use of these drugs is rarely a matter of urgency, their use during the first trimester should almost always be avoided. The possibility that a woman of childbearing potential may be pregnant at the time of institution of therapy should be considered. Patients should be advised that if they become pregnant during therapy or intend to become pregnant they should communicate with their physicians about the desirability of discontinuing the drug.

METHADONE: Methadone has not been shown to directly cause birth defects. At the clinic we’ve seen many healthy, adorable babies born to mothers in methadone treatment. Most babies born exposed to methadone have withdrawals and the hospital has medications to help the baby stay comfortable. If you stop using opiates suddenly you could miscarry, so it’s important to take your prescribed dose of methadone everyday.

  2. Why don't you call her doctor's office and speak to a registered nurse (or her insurance may have a nurse hotline).  I don't think she should be taking any of them, but I'm not qualified to say.  Actually, you can call up any pharmacy and ask them and they'll let you know.  But she really does need to tell her doctor that she's pregnant because it could be harmful to the baby.

  3. her obgyn needs to be notified of the medicines she is taking.. yes all of the above can affect the baby.

  4. Call the doc and let him know you are taking the stuff from her and why, she cant be taking them while she is pregnant.....

  5. dr don't know but she has had an ultrasound????? call her dr and let them know, but see if they will keep it quiet on who you are just to keep tension down!
