i'm 14 and play the flute, and this summer i'm going to a camp where i'll have to play in a wind ensemble, or concert band.

How many flutes are usually in a wind symphony?

Is it usually one on a part?

thank you

  1. I'll just tell you about our high school. Concert band is the lower band for us, and wind ensemble is the higher one. They both have about 15 or so flutes. Usually there are two parts, sometimes three. If you're fourteen and you will be competing for the same spots as high schoolers, you'll probably be in concert. If you're competing for the same spots as sixth and seventh graders, you'll probably be fine. Good luck!

And good choice, going to a band camp. They're always fun. :) Next year, consider LaHonda. www.lahondamuisccamp.com. It's awesome!

  2. I go to a summer music camp every year!

this will be my 6th year and let me tell you it is the best experience ever! :]]

now im not too sure about a wind symphony because ive never been in one. my camp is a concert band thing.

but i hope this helps in some way.

a play the clarinet but i have plenty of flute friends.

its usually always one part. but sometimes itll have two different notes at one time...like a chord? and the front half will play the top note and the back half will play the bottom note.

at my high school we have over 20 flutes.

but at camp, they have...i dont know....10-15 at the most.

    have fun at your camp!!

    where are you going?

  3. wind ensembles are smaller, but dont usually have one on a part.  two on a part is more common for flute,

  4. actually most of the times there are around eight flute players in a section in a wind ensemble but...it depends on how many people audition and are good enough to make wind ensemble or are good enough to make concert band. i've been in both, although i'm not a flute player i've counted them plenty of times. we had one honor band that had fifteen flute players in the top band and the director was peeved because the whole entire ensemble was too top heavy. 15 is too many trust me its not a good balance. depending on how important and how many split parts there are on any one part you may need three to four people on a part to cover it. weird yes...fun yes. camps are fun. i'm going to one this summer for french horn...i wish you luck!!!!
