We added 10 ft to the front of our house. After the wall was torn out the new conrete floor is 1 in higher than the existing floor. How do I make the old floor 1 inch higher so the floor will be level all the way across. We are wanting to lay Pergo on the floor so it has to be completely level. Won't self leveling concrete just cause a ramp affect between the two floors unless I pour it on the entire old floor? Can I level with plywood on the lower floor then lay the Pergo down? Help!!!

  1. OSB is the way to go, cheap and fast.  Are you floating or gluing your pergo?  Floating, you can lay the underlayment and dampen your steps.  Your floors will sound more solid if you glue them down, pain to remove later though.  Why pergo?  You can get stuff for a third of the cost that performs as good or better.  Save your money for a new big screen TV.

  2. lay a vapor barrier on the concrete. use the thickness of plywood that combined with the pergo flooring will add up to one inch

  3. Lay 3/4" OSB (it's cheaper than plywood) over the old subfloor, topped with a layer of 1/4" underlayment.  This may be a fuzz lower than your new floor, so you can float that in with latex floor leveler.  Feather it out for about 8-10 feet from the transition, and you will be good to go.  Hope this helps.

  4. to raise your floor 1 " to meet the additions floor grade level you would have to raise all the floors 1" to meet the addition floor hight throughout the entire house to elimniate the 1 " lip from existing anywhere.this would cause you to have to cut each door  thats installed to accomadate this increase .you would loose 1 " of celing hight .it could affect your electrical code inspection.it would be alot more practical to demo the new floor to meet the existing floors grade.was it a contractor error or your planning error .it would be the contractors responsibality to pay for this error.fix 3 ,if haveing a lip outside of the planed prego floor area  isn't an issue you could install vapor barrier between the concret slab and a new underlayment built up to the hight required, the main conern is fastening the underlayment to the conncret.
