Concussed Morneau told to stay homeMinnesota Twins’ slugger Justin Morneau has not played since July 8 when he was injured sliding into second base. Morneau took a knee to the head when he was trying to break up a double play and suffered a concussion.Morneau was not present at Target Field when the Twins were hosting the Detroit Tigers and he will have to stay home for the rest of the week. This is reportedly not due to a setback as Morneau will continue to work out from home. Doctors told Morneau to stay home as he continues his recovery."He's following doctors' orders," Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He's doing exactly what they want him to do."Morneau’s condition has not improved significantly since the All-Star break. It is still unknown when he can possibly return to the field. He has still been suffering from the symptoms of the concussion. There was some optimism when he began taking swings and joined the team for some of their home games but the best thing right now is for him to rest. The Twins have fared well in Morneau’s absence as they are still up four games on the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. The Sox acquired slugger Manny Ramirez in an effort to catch the Twins. Jim Thome has filled his role as a designated hitter well and the Twins have still managed to keep winning with an already stacked line-up.A return by Morneau would give the Twins a boost in firepower but there is no timetable set for the former MVP’s return. The Twins do not intend to rush their biggest star back and risk further injury. There’s no determining the effects of a concussion. Some baseball players never played again after suffering a concussion while others were able to recover fairly quickly. The Twins have made it clear that they are placing Morneau’s long-term health ahead of their current needs as a baseball team. Morneau was hitting .345 at the time of his injury and a return could lift the Twins but they will make do with what they have as they have done for the past two months.
