I am in the process of purifying mixtures extracted taking certain chemicals out of a solution I have prepared. I have just purchased an Allihn condenser for this purpose. Is this fit for the condenser's purpose? How do i use it? If not, which condenser should I get? I need to assemble the apparatus too, how do you do that?

  1. hi,

    what is an Allihn condensor?

  2. The Allihn condenser or bulb condenser or simply reflux condenser is named after Felix Richard Allihn. The Allihn condenser consists of a long glass tube with a water jacket. There is a series of large and small constrictions on the inside tube, each increasing the surface area upon which the vapor constituents may condense. Ideally suited for laboratory-scale refluxing.

From the above you will gather that this condenser is suited to refluxing  that is the solution is boiled and the vapours are condensed and return to the boiling flask. It is therfore unsatisfactory for your reported use. What you need is a Liebigcondenser. This allows removal of the various solvent fractions depending on their boiling range, which is checked with a thermomoter.
