  1. Train by running longer distances (one or two miles) so you have a good strong base, then work on strength by doing leg and arm weights. Just go out and run if you are not being conditioned by your coach. It is not distance that matters, it is time spent running and keeping your heart rate at a steady fast rate.

  2. You need to do both short and long distance. Long distance means that you will be running everyday (or 5 days a week, but i think 7 would be better) and you run for a few miles. These few miles don't need to be fast, you just need to get your heart moving for a while.

The short distance is very crutial. You should be doing sprint/walks (100m/100m) and do this for a mile. Then you also need to practice your actual event a few times a day.

These times/distances are for when you get into shape. So keep on going for it.
