Question:

Conecting Ordinary desktop computer to wireless conection?

I have a Netgear router from NTL and a lap top with a wireless conection which works fine, However ever I have just got a Dell computer (desktop one not lap top) will a wifi USB key connect the internet to my computer or is there something else I need to do or get ???

Please let me know so that I don't waste my money getting something thats not going to work !!

  1. A USB thing should work, but u might also be able to connect the desktop to the router with an Ethernet cable ands then signal strength won't slow down your speed. To use Ethernet your router has to have Ethernet ports.


  2. Yes, that will work fine.  But, I would recommend purchasing a Netgear wireless NIC for you desktop instead.  These are very strait forward to install and it will be faster than USB.  It should also be a little cheaper.

  3. Depending on what operating system is on the desktop and how old it is will make a difference whether or not it will pick up the USB key or whether you will have to run a program to install the key.

       Once you've run the install program and you are in range, it should work fine. An installation disk will probably come with the key or else look it up on the manufacturers' website and download it from there.
