Confession time: What is the worst/most embarrassing thing you've done so far as a parent?

Many times new parents feel so much pressure to be the perfect parent. I am the mother of a one year old and yes, I have a few embarrassing secrets...So, in order to make parents like me feel a little more normal, tell me: What is the most horrible thing you've done to your kid accidently or on purpose, mistakes you have made, or anything else that you can bear to admit to?

In addition, do you have any little tips that might help out a new mom? (I ask for both myself and anyone else who may read this)

Thanks!

  1. I have had so may bad mom moments i dont even know where to start. I have fallen asleep on the couch to wake up to a bald cat. I have forgotten my children at stores, grandparents, and school. I have fed my kids cupcakes for breakfast. I almost drowned my newborn (they are slippery little things when wet). I became so paranoid that i would block the front door with a sofa when i was home alone with my kids. I have screamed when i shouldnt. I have let rules slide and given in when i shouldn't. My best advice is roll with it and do the best you can. Its all any of us can do.

And for the record do NOT ever bite a child. It is legally child abuse in every state in the US. It is the malicious punishment of a child and can be punishable with loss of your children, fines, and mandatory parenting classes. if you use that method your asking for trouble.

  2. The best thing I have seen so far is a little plack thing I have in my twins boys room that says :Please Be Patient With Me, God Isn't Finished Yet" It's hard but I really try to keep it in mind.

One of the most embarassing things is this. I went out of town with a friend of mine and her kids. It was a super cold frosted and iced over day, with plenty of snow everywhere. My kids are notorious for taking their shoes off in the car and they had been cranky all day. I lifted my 2 yr old son out of his car seat and set him down outside the car. He just started screaming, I turned around to tell him to stop when I realized he didn't have any shoes or socks on and was standing on a slab of ice. Now I check everytime I get them out of the car.

  3. By far, the worst mom moment I ever had was when my daughter started this phase when she was 3.  She was so thirsty and SOOO crabby - constantly.  She was making me nuts.  She also refused to eat.  I was so angry with her!  I scolded her and punished her, and one day made her sit there and finish her dinner.  By the way, crabby doesn't even touch it.  It's more like impossible.  Kind of like that of an over-tired two year old when they skip both naps.

Two days later they admitted her to the hospital with type 1 diabetes.  Try to imagine how I felt.  Oh my god, you never saw a person with such guilt.  I felt rotten.  I am the worst mother ever - just kept playing over and over in my head.

    Not my finest moment.

Oh my god Kat, well said!  I always look forward to reading what you have to say.

  4. oh man...lol. Well being a new mom myself Im battling severe sleep deprivation and a couple nights ago I woke up in the middle of the night to give my four week old a bottle ( I have to pump my milk because of an infection Im battling) but anyways...the next thing I know I woke up with a start and realized that I had fallen asleep and the whole bottle was empty and all over his clothes : (    I felt SOOOO horrible! I had missed his mouth and was feeding his shoulder, lol...funny now but it made me feel horrible at the time!

  5. Tip: when a child bites you...bite back. lol...sounds mean but i did it and the biting stopped.  Just don't bite too hard you wouldn't want to hurt your child! LOL...and only because you asked...I am 23 and have three kids...and i won't admit this to anyone...but when my kids scream at the store...i'll scream back...lol...i take them to a quiet aisle...but a very short "Ahhhhhhhhh" usually gets them to make a look and then I make a silly face and they laugh.  Then i can distract them with something else.  And I'm sure a million people have told you...but if your shild is starting to walk...and i'm sure he/she is...try not to react every time they fall or fall and hit their head.  LOL...my daughter is fine with me but her dad always reacts and then she starts screaming.  lol...a little independance never hurt anyone.
