Confident
Thompson fires 68 in second round of 2012 Dubai Masters
American Lexi Thompson further strengthened her position in the second round of Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2012, shooting a 68 to cling to the seventh position on the leaderboard.
Thompson, who is the defending champion of Dubai Masters being played at Emirates Golf Club, got off to a strong start as she posted a 69 in the first round on Wednesday.
Thompson started the round on Thursday with confidence, knowing well her first-round score was not enough to put her atop the leaderboard.
She was still six strokes behind the second-round leader Shanshan Feng of China who carded a 65 on Thursday, but posting a 68 gave her much-needed confidence.
Coming on strong, the rising star sank two straight birdies on the second and third hole on the front nine. She then parred the next three holes, and fired another birdie-putt on the difficult
par-3 7th.
On the back nine, Thompson further boosted her score by shooting the fourth birdie of the day. She remained cautious on the greens and avoided scoring a bogey.
Speaking to the media about what caused her to remain strong on the second day, Thompson said that since she practised so much for the season-ending battle, she played with new vigour.
She said she is happy that she managed to pull off a great day on Thursday.
“I am feeling good about my game. I shot a three-under in the first round and four in the second, so I am getting better. If I can shoot five or six under on the weekend that will put me in
a good position,” said Thompson who mostly plays on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour.
“You can make a lot of birdies out there and, hopefully, I have saved them for the weekend”.
Given that the Omega Dubai Ladies Master is the final event of the 2012 LET (Ladies European Tour) season, players are making sure they finish strong and cap off the year in winning style.
Thompson, however, is under much tighter scrutiny because of her reputation both on the LET and the LPGA Tour. Although the American star has racked up only one LET title so far, she is being
expected to finish off the season on a promising note.
