Question:

Configuring a DHCP server to allow computers to Boot from Network

We're rolling out some new laptops and we're using some new imaging software (Symantec Ghost), and long story short the fastest way to do it is to configure the PCs to boot from the network. Ghost will create the boot package for us, but what do we need to do to our DHCP server so that the clients will know where to find the boot server?

  1. in the dhcp server on Unix there's a "server" line or a "next" directive that tells the client where to go next.

other dhcp servers shoudl have similar. the dhcp server on wireless access points, for example, have it.

  2. you can set Advanced Server Options in DHCP. we use 060 ClassID for PXE boot deployment.  This tells the client where to load the setup.

If you have a sysmantec bootdisk, doesn't this specify the deployment sever to the client? And if so, the client should only need a valid IP from the DHCP server.

  3. Enable remote desktop on the server and all of the nodes, set up the domains, subnet masks, and switches routers, name servers. if you have no Idea what I just said hire an MCSE or CCNP this is what they do for a living.
