  1. The restraining orders and injunctions don't cost anything but it costs a lot to get a lawyer to go through all the work to get the court to approve them.  You have to prove your case with evidence and witnesses just like on TV.  Lawyers have to put  in lots of hours and hire investigators and pay filing fees, etc.  You can't get it done for free.

However, the cheapest way to do something like this is to go to a Justice of the Peace and ask them the procedure and cost to get a Peace Bond against a person.  Then the bad guy has to go post a bond with the court.

  2. You need an order of protection but the accused has to be arrested first then a judge decides if an order of protection is needed and issues it.

  3. If you are in the UK, you may qualify for legal aid. Many solicitors offer a free initial interview to identify the problem and how it might be funded.

Also, if the threat was serious enough, it may amount to a criminal offence and you may be able to make a complaint to the police. If court action followed, the criminal court also has the power to impose a restraint order in certain circumstances.

    Hope that helps
