When I enter "www.ip-adress.com" it says my IP address is 218.186.--.-. (I hid the last few numbers)

But when I do to command prompt and type 'ipconfig' is says IP address is 192.168.-.---.

Why is there this difference?

Whats actually my IP address?

  1. ok, your subnet ip adress is the 192.168.x.x  your internet ip is 218.186.x.x

192.168.x.x is the ip your router gives to computers behind it, while 192.168.x.x is the ip that your isp gives your router.

  2. You have a "local" ip address.  That is your computer's IP address on your local network: 192.168....  Then your internet connection (router) has a specific IP address on the internet.  That is the 218.186...

The difference is quite large acutally.  With NAT (Network Address Translation) you can have many computers on your local network, all with a unique IP adrdress, but when they go to the internet, the all connect through the same router with the same IP address.

So to answer your 2nd question... your actual ip address is... local ip: 192.168.... and your "public" ip: 218.186...

Hope that clears it up a bit.  Clear as mud ey?

  3. The 192.--- is most likely your router if you have one set up, 218.186...is the one given to your by your isp.. Hmmmm 218.186... I'll be there in a minute =). just kidding.

  4. ''''''''''''''''''''best and quickest solution is to call your internet provider.  They will give your your correct ping number,  Enter it into your control panel section, first page, after entering, turn off and restart your computer..

  5. You are behind a router and the 192.168.0.1 is your ethernet address. The one visible to internet is the 218.186......

    It really helped me...

  7. the 192.168.x*x.x*x is your ip address on your local network... the other is your ip address on the internet... ISPs only have a limited number of IP addresses and each device on a network has to have a unique IP address... to put it simply, all the devices on your network will see each other with the 192.168.x*x.x*x  addresses.. but computer outside of your local network will see you computer with the 218.186.x*x.x*x ip address

  8. the reason is because you're probably behind a router/modem.

since in this era with ipv4, there isnt enough ip addresses available, and so NAT must be used. NAT basically means that multiple computer are connected to a modem/router with one ip address. the modem/router assigns ip addresses to the network under it.

to answer your second question, your ip address is both.  the 218 is the address from the world to your router, and the 192 is the address from your router to your computer.
