What is the difference between college and university? I have a student at a university that requires 12 credit hours per semester to be fulltime. I have another student at a college that requires 4 credit hours per semester. I am so.. confused. I am also wondering how to explain this to the insurance company they require fulltime status (12 credit hours). Can anyone help?

  1. There really isn't much of a difference. Colleges are just smaller than universities and usually give you specialized attention. It's true that because colleges are smaller they usually don't offer as many degrees as universities but not always.

  2. College and University is generally considered the same thing.  The 4 hour semester as full time is pretty sketchy. Most classes are between 3 and 4 hours each, meaning your student would only be going to 1 class a week.

However, They may be getting confused in vocabulary as 4 classes is generally equivalent 12 credit hours.

Hours are equivalent to the number of hours you spend in a classroom each week.  So for a 3 hour class, you get 3 credit hours, if the class has a 1 hour lab, you get 4 credit hours.

  3. i think a university is waay better and there are more course choices. i think its kind of like many colleges in one.

    im not suree

  4. A University is comprised of more than one college.  For example Boston College is a University because it has several colleges, a college of arts and sciences (liberal arts), a college of business, and a college of nursing.

College of the Holy Cross is not a university.  It consists only of a single liberal arts college.
