Question:

Confused on Rabbit Genders?

I have 2 rabbits. one has white ears and the other has brown ears. I am so confused on what their gender is. I have gone on-line and checked how to s*x a rabbit, but none of them have worked. Now I'm so confused on whether they're both boys, or if one is a girl.

Here's why I think this:

I think the white-eared rabbit might be a girl because it's bigger than the other one, making me think she is pregnant (I think this because we got them since they were babies and the white-eared one was always smaller than the other one).

Now this is why I think the brown-eared rabbit is a girl:

The white-eared rabbit mounts this brown-eared rabbit.

And the other reason I think this brown-eared rabbit might be the girl, is because this is the one rabbit that has ....umm...well I'll call them b*****s. I don't know if that's the technical term but whatever. The white-eared rabbit doesn't have this characteristic.

Anyways, if you can be of help, please do so, and sorry that this is so long.

  1. well, if the brown eared rabbit is a girl, then her *cough* "chest" should look like it's puffing out a bit (fluffier??). males dont hv this characteristic. if the white eared rabbit "mounts (humps o_O)" the other one, then, yeah its probably a boy. my male dutch does that to my arm.....umm..yeah. it would kinda help tho if u would show me some pictures, so i can better identify them. you can email them to me at smarticle96@yahoo.com if u want.

or just email me. well i hope that helped! :-)

  2. Do you mean that the brown eared rabbit has nipples protruding? because if that's the case then she is probably pregnant, meaning that she is the female and the white eared is the male.

If you're not sure about what s*x they are it's best to check with a vet or someone with knowledge on sexing animals.

It could turn out that they are both the same s*x as rabbits of the same s*x will often try to mount eachother. You could have they both neutered to eradicate the problem.

  3. :P  You can't tell which is a male or female based on those observations.  Both males and females will mount each other.  It's a dominance things for both sexes.  Size has nothing to do with it either.  Both males and females DO have nipples.

See the link below.  Read all three pages.  The male will have a "dot" at the end of a "cone".  It may seem to "open up" a bit.  That is the buck.  If it is about 3 months old or so, it will have balding patches just forward of, and to the sides of it's genitals where the testicles will descend when about 3 - 4 months old.

The female will clearly have  "line" or slit on that "cone" when her genitals are exposed.  If your rabbits are 8 weeks or older, it should be very clear which is which when you flip them over and expose their genitals.

I recently had a bit of a problem sexing two litters.  I couldn't decide which was which.  "Odd" I thought.  "I should know what a buck and a doe looks like!"  Turns out I just wasn't believing my eyes.  Almost all the kits were bucks!  I just didn't believe  could get so many all at once.  Weird, but it happens.  So, if you check out the link below and you are still having trouble, perhaps you're looking at two bucks.  IMO the does are quite obvious with their "line" down the cone.

If you still can't tell, keep them separated until someone with more experience can tell you.
