Confusing math problem?

ok the problem is: the sum of the two numbers is 58 and the difference is 16 what are the two numbers? so I guess the problem looks like this:

x + y = 58

x - y = 16

what are the numbers?! I'm so confused.

  1.  x + y = 58 ----------------- (i)


     x - y = 16 ----------------(ii)


    now, change the sings of 2nd equation, and add both equations


    you will get


    2y = 42, 


    y = 42/2


    y = 21, now put the value of  (y) in equation one you will get x value
