Congo goalkeeper Yves Makabu-Makalambay joins Swansea
Congo international goalkeeper Yves Makabu-Makalambay has joined League Championship outfit  Swansea City on a season-long loan.
Makabu-Makalambay is likely to make his debut this evening at Peterborough in the third round of the Carling Cup. The goalkeeper has been brought in to provide competition for Dorus De Vries and David Cornell for a starting place.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper was given a trial with Swansea having been released by Hibernian at the end of last season. The contract was offered to the 6ft 7in Congo player after he impressed during his trial over the summer.
Makabu-Makalambay has worked with the new Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers previously. The two worked together while at Chelsea in 2006. Makabu-Makalambay was 3rd choice at the club with Petr Cech the first choice for keeper at Stamford Bridge.
Makabu-Makalambay was on the bench in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League in 2006. Rodgers was part of the Chelsea back-room staff and the Swansea manager will know what qualities the goalkeeper will bring to the team.
The club has started the season well and are currently on 12 points and in sixth position. It is expected that Makabu-Makalambay will add further strength to the Welsh squad who are one of a dozen teams who have the potential to reach the play-offs and gain
promotion to the Premier League.
Swansea has also signed Frank Nouble up front to compete with Stephen Dobie for a place. The West Ham player was signed on a three-month loan deal and will be most likely used as a squad player similar to Makabu-Makalambay. However, the Congo player hopes
to become first choice at Swansea and said, “I believe in myself and will do all that I can.”
