Connacht Junior Grade A Open: Fintan Keown beats Colin Robert Watterson to claim Men’s Singles title
Ireland’s budding shuttler Fintan Keown surprised everyone by playing spectacular badminton on court and secured Men’s Singles title after beating Colin Robert Watterson in final contest of Connacht Junior Grade A Open 2012 in Ireland, on Sunday, December
30.
The lower ranked Keown, who was the un-seeded player in Men’s Singles draw of the championship, displayed his elevated skills on court and he remained successful in beating the third seeded Colin in a nail-biting battle.
Keown was in smashing form as he fought really well and maintained pressure on his higher ranked challenger all the way and ended up the contest in three games with a close margin on the score board.
On the other hand, the third seeded Colin tried his best to play positive badminton but he failed to take advantage at any stage in the whole match and eventually went down against his un-seeded opponent in a reasonable manner.
In the opening set, both played put up strong show of top class badminton and entertained their home fans by playing attacking and positive game. They were quite close on the board until the one-minute break.
After the interval, both contestants continued showing up their staggering skills on court but failed to set up a clear lead at any stage and reached at 23-23.
At this breath-taking stage, Keown could not control the pace of rallies at this crucial stage and eventually lost the first set with a tight 23-25 score on the board.
In the second game, it was again a thrilling contest between both shuttlers as they pushed each other in all corners and stayed close until the break.
After the one-minute interval, it was Keown who started to get a good flow and eventually remained successful in winning the set with a tight margin of 21-19.
In the deciding game, Keown was on a different level as he played positive and aggressive badminton and was in a strong position until the mid-game interval.
In the concluding half of third set, the un-seeded Keown continued putting up superb show while remaining quick in all corners of the court and remained successful in taking the final game with a wonderful 21-16 score on the board.
The impressive Keown emerged as the crown winner in this home tournament as he delivered inspiring performance in the final encounter and finished it up with a narrow margin of 23-25, 21-19 and 21-16.
