I have to connect a tv to a dvd player, but the tv only has a coaxial connection and the dvd player only has AV connection. Is there any kind of adapter or anything out there to make this happen without having to route everything through my old vcr?

  1. Yes.  A Coax to RCA cable will work.

  2. A simple "coax to RCA cable" will not work.  You need to do more than simply adapt the plugs!

The device you need is called an RF modulator (also called a TV modulator).  This device combines and modulates the Audio and Video signals (also called "baseband" signals) into an analog TV channel (usually switchable to channel 3 or 4) that can be tuned on the TV's tuner.

Routing the Audio and Video through your VCR to your TV works too (as you have mentioned), because you are using the RF modulator section in the VCR.

RF (or TV) modulators are available as completely stand-alone devices or built into AV switch boxes (in case you have more than one source with AV out that needs to be hooked to your old TV).

You can purchase an RF modulator pretty much where you might expect to find them:  Best Buy, Radio Shack, Target, Walmart, etc.  It should cost between $10 and $40 depending on where you buy it and whether it has multiple source switching.
