Question:

Connect to the Net using Modem on Laptop?

OK, I have a dell desktop computer and an HP Laptop. Before this issue, they both connected to the internet nicely using my DSL Gateway modem.

1) My sister tried to watch a dvd in the laptop and jammed it. My dads co worker tried to fix it but erased ALL the programs. I restored some

with a Windows XP Home CD.

2) Now after putting in the ethernet cable in the modem and the laptop, it won't connect. The desktop I am using is working just fine. I checked the LAN settings for each and for the desktop it says:

Connec/Firewalled .... Broadcam 440x10

On the laptp it says : Connec/Firewalled ... Net Adapter 1394

So what is the reason why my laptop won't connect?

  1. If that's the only NIC you have showing, the restore didn't find you NIC on the laptop. You will have to go to HP and download the correct drivers for your internal NIC, and install them.

  2. Open control panel and on internet options select make a new connection.  That will open the internet connection wizard.  Of course, if  you're using dial-up, you have to have a dial-up account with your ISP so you'll have a user name and password as well as the local number to dial.

  3. The laptop is missing it's ethernet drivers.  Go out to the HP support site and down load the drivers for the ethernet adapter. transfer them to a flash drive and then to your laptop.

The 1394 adapter is the firewire adapter on your laptop.

  4. You don't just plug it in you have to set the internet up
