Connected battery wrong on my new boat, now nothing works?

I got a new boat. It has electrical system on it for playing a stereo, watching tv, other things. It uses a battery to run all these things. I accidently connected both connections to the positive post. There was alot of sparks, and smoke. Now nothing electrical works inside the boat. I changed the fuses and such, but I noticed alot of the wires inside have been burned. Is this expensive to fix?

  1. This doesn't make sense. Both leads were connected to the same voltage,(12 volts+ dc) therefore no difference in potential. You need to always have a difference in voltage for energy (ie burnt wiring) to occur. I would have to check but I don't think this should hurt anything. Also, how did you get both terminals on 1 post? Steve

  2. There should be a main breaker that tripped before major damage was done to those components. Try finding it and resetting, then check out the systems for damage.

  3. Way to go Ace. You fried anything that is transistorised as well as the starter and the alternator along with your wires.

Yeah, it's gonna be a real expensive fix. Good luck.

  4. Yep. Probably needs to be completely rewired, not really a backyard project. Take it to a marine shop for a guestimate.

  5. You probably just blew a fuse.  Find your main fuse and see if its blown.

  6. Contact your insurance comp>As your talking quite a few thousands of $ in damage>As you have put reverse politary in the system> > It will have to be completely rewired>& Replaced>Leave all the batterys disconected or your boat will catch on fire>

  7. yes it is

  8. anything on a boat is expensive to fix.  but if you have a boat you must have the money.
