Connected to wireless but not internet

Hi,

I moved to a rented house where there's wireless internet connection.

The owner gave me the permission to use the internet.

- I can connect to the network ( don't require to enter password)

- I cannot browse. I could actually browse a few times (like for 10-15 mins) but then it stopped.

- I am using vista and I tried to use the repair option but that did not help.

- The wireless signal strength show status as excellent.

- My owner uses the same connection but says he has no problem.

Since I can browse sometimes, even chatted with my friend on IM, it seems the drivers and settings in my laptop are ok.

- Since I could browse earlier It also doe not seem to be a problem with the firewall.

Can someone please help me with the issue?

  1. How many people are using the wireless signal?  Is the wireless router secured against neighbors using the signal?

How far from the router are you?  Are there electronic devices like wireless phones between you and the router?

The link below has a discussion about wireless network security.

Link 2 has some good tips on reducing potential sources of interference, plus ways to optimize your wireless signal strength.

  2. What firewall are you using?

When did it stop working?  Had you just done Microsoft updates?

    If on ZoneAlarms. check this:

    http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/p...

If that is not the problem, ask the owner if you can plug directly into the router and test that way.  Go to a library or somewhere with free wireless and test to see if it works there.

  3. Your computer may only be connected locally, but not to the internet. Networks are like this. Try resetting the router or restarting the computer. It should work.

  4. update networkcarddrivers
