Connecticut Sun, Indiana Fever and Los Angeles Sparks win - WNBA Roundup August 21, 2011
Three games took place in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Sunday, August 21, 2011. Here is a brief review of the three games:
Connecticut Sun 96 - Atlanta Dream 87
Renee Montgomery scored a team high 21 points as Connecticut Sun cruised past Atlanta Dream 96-87 at Mohegan Sun Arena, snapping their two-game losing streak.
Montgomery also had eight assists and three steals. Asjha Jones recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Tina Charles and punctuated 18 points in the victory. Tan White had 13 points and Kara Lawson ended
with 11 points for Connecticut.
Angel McCoughtry scored a game high 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out four assists, stole the ball twice and blocked two shots. Erika de Souza totalled 17 points and 10 rebounds while Lindsey Harding contributed 14 points,
nine assists and four rebounds in the loss. Armintie Price added 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and four blocks for Atlanta.
Atlanta got off to a good start and carried a ten-point lead, 26-16, after first quarter. The Sun however outscored Dream 32-15 in the second quarter and raced to a 48-41 advantage at halftime. Atlanta fought hard in the third
quarter and trimmed their deficit to 66-63, heading into the fourth.
Connecticut made inroads early in the last quarter and scored the first four points to open up a seven point gap. They never relinquished their lead after that.
Indiana Fever 83 - Washington Mystics 51
At Conseco Fieldhouse, Katie Douglas tallied 15 points and pulled down five rebounds as Indiana Fever crushed Washington Mystics 83-51, handing them their fifth consecutive defeat.
Jessica Davenport added 14 points and Tamika Catchings finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana. Crystal Langhorne headed the Mystics with 11 points, seven
rebounds and two steals while Jasmine Thomas also scored 11 points and grabbed three rebounds in the losing effort.
Fever limited the slumping Washington to just 23 points in the first half and carried a 16 point lead into the locker room. Both teams scored 19 points apiece in the third period as Indiana maintained their 16-point lead. After
dominating throughout the game, Fever simply blew away in the in the fourth quarter and inflicted the second biggest margin of defeat on Mystics this season.
Los Angeles Sparks 73 - Tulsa Shock 67
Candace Parker racked up a game high 23 points, including 16 in the second half, as Los Angeles Sparks defeated the WNBA-worse Tulsa Shock 73-67, handing them their 18th straight defeat – the longest losing streak in
the league history.
Parker also had nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks for Sparks. DeLisha Milton-Jones chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds while Toliver came off the bench with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists in the victory.
Sheryl Swoopes led Shock with 17 points and six rebounds while Jennifer Lacy posted 13 points. Ivory Latta had 11 points, six assists and three steals while Tiffany Jackson grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss.
Swoopes scored 13 of her points in the first half as Tulsa carried a 45-32 at halftime. Los Angeles limited Shock to nine points in the third quarter and cut Tulsa’s lead to just one, 54-53. They then opened the fourth quarter
on a 5-0 run to take a 58-54 lead and did not trail for rest of the quarter.
