Connecticut Sun and Indiana Fever win – WNBA Roundup July 31, 2011 (Part 1)
On Sunday night, three games took place in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here is a brief review of the three games:
Connecticut Sun 99 – Atlanta Dream 92
Connecticut Sun improved to second position in the Eastern Conference with 99-92 victory over the Atlanta Dream at Mohegan Sun Arena. The defeat snapped Atlanta’s five-game winning streak.
Renee Montgomery led Connecticut with 19 points on a 5 of 11 shooting from the field and 7 for 8 from free throw line. Montgomery also added four assists and three steals in the victory. Asjha Jones had 17 points and dished out four assists while Danielle McCray posted 16 points for Sun, who have won four of their previous five games. Tina Charles recorded a double-double for the Sun with 11 rebounds and 10 points.
Angel McCoughtry scored a game-high 36 point, including 19 of them in the final period, grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists in the loss. The 24-year-old shot 14 for 27 from the floor and 7 for 9 from the line.
Erika de Souza and Coco Miller chipped in with 18 points each in the losing effort. Iziane Castro Marques had 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Dream, who are fifth in the East.
Connecticut held a 25-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. Atlanta outscored Sun 26-20 in the second quarter but Connecticut still maintained a three-point lead, 45-42, lead at halftime.
The Dream converted the first half deficit into a 69-66 lead, heading into the fourth quarter. Atlanta carried an 89-88 lead before Connecticut responded with seven unanswered points and went ahead by 95-89. McCoughtry then hit a three-pointer to cut the margin to three but Jones and Montgomery hit a pair of free throws in the last 15 seconds to seal the victory.
Indiana Fever 98 - Los Angeles Sparks 63
At Conseco Fieldhouse, Indiana Fever’s reserves set a franchise record with 57 points as Indiana cruised past Los Angeles Sparks 98-63 for their fourth consecutive victory.
Jessica Davenport came off the bench with a game-high 16 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists for the Fever.
Tangela Smith registered 15 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Fever, who have won seven of their previous 10 games. Shavonte Zellous punctuated 13 points and Jeanette Pohlen ended with 10 points for Indiana.
Ebony Hoffman led Los Angeles with 13 points and six rebounds, pinning 6 of 6 free throws. Jantel Lavender totalled 12 points, three rebounds and two blocks while Noelle Quinn finished with 11 points, three rebounds and two steals in the defeat.
