Connecticut Sun and Minnesota Lynx win – WNBA Roundup August 26, 2011: Part 1
Four games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Friday, August 26, 2011. Here is a brief review of the games:
Connecticut Sun 95 - Phoenix Mercury 92
At Mohegan Sun Arena, Asjha Jones recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds as Connecticut Sun beat Phoenix Mercury 95-92 for their second consecutive victory. It was second straight loss for Mercury.
Tina Charles led 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists while Renee Montgomery had 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals in the victory. Kalana Greene and Kara Lawson also contributed 14 points apiece for Connecticut.
Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor led Mercury with 26 points each. Nakia Sanford registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Candice Dupree added 11 rebounds, 10 points and six assists in the loss.
Phoenix shot 49.3 percent (36 for 73) from the field and limited the hosts to only 43.8 percent (35 for 80). Mercury committed 14 turnovers as compared to just nine by Connecticut.
Taylor scored eight of her points in the first quarter as Phoenix held a 31-25 lead into the second. Sun limited Mercury to 16 points in the second quarter and trimmed their deficit to three, 47-44, at halftime. Mercury played
well in the third quarter and pushed their lead to 70-65, heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Connecticut made a comeback and 92-86 with 13 seconds remaining in the game. Phoenix then reeled off a 6-1 run to make it one-point contest, 93-92. however, Lawson hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
Minnesota Lynx 85 - San Antonio Silver Stars 75
Seimone Augustus had 19 points and five rebounds as Minnesota Lynx cruised past San Antonio Silver Stars 85-75 at Target Center, handing them their fifth consecutive defeat.
Maya Moore posted 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Rebekkah Brunson contributed 15 points and eight rebounds in the victory. Lindsay Whalen added 14 points, nine assists, five rebounds and two steals while Taj McWilliams-Franklin
ended the game with 10 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Danielle Robinson added 11 points to lead the Silver Stars. Forwards Sophia Young and Danielle Adams contributed 10 points and two steals apiece for San Antonio.
The Lynx shot 47.9 percent (34 for 71) from the field while Silver Stars finished with only 45.9 percent (28 for 61).
Whalen scored 12 of her points in the first half of the game as Minnesota carried a 38-36 lead into the locker room. Lynx pushed their lead to four, 61-57, at the end of the third quarter. Minnesota opened the fourth quarter with
12 consecutive points and stretched their lead to 73-57. Lynx did not trail for rest of the game and walked away with their fourth consecutive victory.
