Connecticut Sun and Minnesota Lynx win: WNBA Roundup June 19, 2011 – Part 1
On Sunday night, four games took place in Women National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here are the highlights of the games:
Connecticut Sun 83 - Chicago Sky 68
Tina Charles had a season-high 31 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as Connecticut cruised past the Chicago Sky 83-68 at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Kara Lawson came off the bench with 13 points and seven rebounds for Connecticut, who moved onto a 4-1 record with the win. Lawson also pinned 3-of-4 three-pointers, making a pair of them in the first half of the game. Asjha Jones
also added 12 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Sylvia Fowles led Chicago with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals. Guard Epiphanny Prince contributed 18 points, four rebounds and four steals while Cathrine Kraayeveld added 13 points and four rebounds for Sky, who lost their
second game of this season.
Connecticut, who led by three points at the end of the first quarter, went on a 9-0 run in the closing minutes of the second quarter and held a 48-33 lead at halftime.
Chicago opened the third quarter with a 10- 5 spurt to cut the deficit to 10 points, 53-43. However, Sun turned it on late in the third and took a ten-point lead, 62-52, into the fourth. Sky never came within eight, the rest of
the way and held on to a win.
Minnesota Lynx 77 - Atlanta Dream 64
Seimone Augustus matched a game-high 19 points and clinched six rebounds as Minnesota Lynx beat Atlanta Dream 77-64. After losing the season opener, the Lynx have now won five in a row.
Lindsay Whalen added 13 points and five assists while the No. 1 draft pick this season, Maya Moore racked up 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Lynx, who held Atlanta to only 30 percent shooting from the field. Rebekkah
Brunson also added 10 points, 10 rebounds and two steals while Taj McWilliams-Franklin grabbed 12 rebounds for Minnesota.
Lindsey Harding led Dream with a season-high 14 points, three assists, and three rebounds. Erika DeSouza, Angel McCoughtry, and Coco Miller scored 10 points each. DeSouza also added 12 rebounds and four blocks for Dream.
Minnesota took the game to Atlanta early and outscored them 26-10 in the first quarter. They maintained their momentum and by the time, the teams went into the break, Lynx were leading by 43-31. Minnesota showed no signs of slowing
down in the third and stretched their lead to as many as 24 late in the period. At the culmination of the penultimate frame Lynx were leading Fever by 66-45.
Dream opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run that trimmed the Minnesota’s 21-point lead to 12. However, the Lynx responded with 9-1 run to stretch their lead to 20 points to virtually seal the game. They didn’t look back after
that.
