Connecticut Sun 69 – Chicago Sky 58
Tina Charles tied the WNBA record with seventh consecutive double-doubles to help Indiana Connecticut Sun to a 69-58 victory over Chicago Sky 69-58 on Tuesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Charles scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the victory, tying a league record set by Seattle Storm’s forward centre Lauren Jackson in 2003.
Kara Lawson added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists while Asjha Jones had 12 points, five rebounds and two steals in the second straight win of Connecticut. Renee Montgomery had 10 points, three steals, two assists and two
rebounds in the victory.
Sylvia Fowles led Sky with 19 points and 11 boards in more than 37 minutes of action. Eshaya Murphy posted 18 points, four steals and four rebounds in the loss. Tamera Young recorded a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points
for Sky, who have lost six of their previous 10 games.
Connecticut shot 36.2 percent (25 for 69) from the field and held the visiting team to just 27.5 percent (19 for 69).
Sun limited Chicago to 28 points in the first half and maintained an 11-point lead, 39-28, at halftime. Connecticut outscored Sky 16-13 in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 14 points, 55-41. Chicago did not get any closer
than six points in the fourth quarter and Connecticut walked away with another easy victory.
New York Liberty 58 – Seattle Storm 56
At Prudential Center, Cappie Pondexter produced a game-high 19 points, five assists and three rebounds as New York Liberty edged past Seattle Storm 58-56 for their third victory in the previous four games.
Plenette Pierson added 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks for Liberty, who are third in the Eastern Conference with a 13-9 record.
Sue Bird led Storm with 17 points, four assists and four rebounds while Tanisha Wright and Katie Smith added 11 points each in the second consecutive loss of Seattle. Swin Cash finished with just six points on a 1 for 13 shooting
from the floor.
Liberty shot 39.3 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from free throw line while Seattle shot just 30.9 percent from the floor and 85.7 percent from the line. The liberty committed 13 turnovers while Storm committed 18.
Pierson scored seven of her points in the first quarter as New York held a 20-12 lead into the second. Seattle made a marginal comeback in the second quarter and cut Liberty’s lead to three, 32-29, at intermission. New York and
Seattle played a sloppy basketball in the third quarter, missing some sitters, but Liberty managed to make it 44-40, heading into the final period.
Storm came back into the game in the fourth quarter and held a 56-55 lead with 01:36 remaining in the game. However, Pondexter responded with a lay-up to give New York a point advantage and Pierson hit a free throw to seal the
victory.
