Connecticut Sun beat Atlanta Dream 99-92; Nip their five-game winning streak– WNBA Recap
On Sunday night, four of Connecticut starters reached double figures as the Sun snapped the five-game winning streak of Atlanta Dream with a 99-92 decision at Mohegan Sun Arena. With this victory, Connecticut improved to second
position in the Eastern Conference with an 11-6 record.
Renee Montgomery scored a team-high 19 points, pinning 7 of 8 free throws, dished out four assists and had three steals in the victory. Asjha Jones racked up 17 points, including eight with 3:50 to go in the game. Jones shot 6
for 12 from the field and 5 for 8 from free throw line. Danielle McCray added 16 points on a 6 for 10 shooting from the floor, hitting 3 for 4 three-pointers. Tina Charles was the only player of the night who recorded a double-double with a game best 11 rebounds
and 10 points for Connecticut.
Despite not feeling well, Angel McCoughtry had a huge game to keep her team afloat. McCoughtry came off the bench to top all the scorers of the night with 36 point, including 19 of them in the fourth quarter. She also had four
rebounds and three assists. The player shot 14 for 27 from the floor and 7 for 9 from the line.
Erika de Souza and Coco Miller scored 18 points each in the loss. De Souza also contributed nine rebounds and two steals. Iziane Castro Marques ended with 10 points, seven boards and six assists for the Dream, who are just one
victory behind Chicago Sky for the fourth position in the East.
Atlanta’s shooting from the field was much better than the winners as they shot 56.5 percent and limited Connecticut to just 47.3 percent. However, the Dream committed 20 turnovers as compared to just 14 by the Sun. In addition
to that, Connecticut outscored Atlanta 52-38 in points in the paint.
Connecticut was able to match Dream with a solid first-quarter play from De Souza, who had eight points in the opening 10 minutes of the game. The Sun carried a nine-point lead, 25-16, into the second frame. In the second quarter,
Atlanta outplayed Connecticut 26-20 but to slash the lead to 45-42 lead at halftime.
Trailing by three points at intermission, Atlanta stormed into the third quarter and erased the first half deficit early. Dream carried a ten-point lead, 69-59, with 43 second to go in the third period, but Connecticut went on
a scoring spree in the last 22 seconds of the third and trimmed the margin to three, 69-66, heading into the fourth.
Atlanta started the last quarter quite positively and took an 89-88 lead with 01:58 to go in the game. However, the Sun raced way down the stretch with a 10-3 run to seal the victory.
