Connecticut Sun beat Chicago Sky 77-66; Record their fourth consecutive victory –WNBA Recap
On Tuesday night, Asjha Jones racked up 22 points to lead Connecticut Sun to a 77-66 over Chicago Sky at Allstate Arena. Four Sun player notched up double figures on the night to record their fourth win on a trot. On the other
end of the spectrum, it was the second consecutive defeat for Chicago and the loss also snapped their four-game home winning streak.
Connecticut have now improved to a 10-5 record at the top of the Western Conference. Jones also grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots in the victory. The 30-year-old forward shot 7 for 16 from the field and a perfect 7 for
7 from free throw line.
Tina Charles recorded a double-double with 21 points and a game best 15 rebounds. Charles, the WNBA Rookie of the Year 2010, also blocked three shots and went 10 for 17 from the field. In addition to her brilliant performance,
Charles switched on to Sylvia Fowles on the back court and played an exceptional one-on-one defence. She kept league’s leading scorer on the perimeter, forced her into contested jump shots and limited her to just four points in the first half of the game.
"I tried to get her out of her rhythm, trying to play hard defence," Charles said of Fowles. "I think me and her, when we play against each other, we try to take it personal ... so just that matchup alone and the way my teammates
helped me, telling me where she is and they had my back on defence, and it made it easier."
Renee Montgomery and Kara Lawson tallied 14 points each for Sun, who have won four of their previous six games.
Epiphanny Prince took the responsibility on her shoulders when their top scorer was limited from every angle. Prince led Chicago with 16 points. Despite being hounded, Fowles found her way to record a double-double in the losing
effort. She scored 14 points, including 10 of them in the second half, and pulled down 12 rebounds for Chicago. Tamera Young had 10 points, five assists and two steal for Sky, who have lost three of their last four games.
Sun shot 46.4 percent from the field and held Chicago to 40.3 percent. Chicago had a slight edge over Connecticut of points in the paint 36-32; however, Sky committed 20 turnovers as compared to just nine by the visiting team.
Five players scored for Chicago in the first quarter as they took a 17-15 lead into the second. Connecticut limited Sky to 15 points in the second quarter and converted their opening period’s deficit into a two-point lead, 34-32,
at halftime.
The third quarter was where the game changed. Sun stretched their lead to 12 points, 51-39, with 04:19 to go in the frame. Chicago however responded with a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to eight, 53-45, heading into the fourth. Connecticut
maintained their lead throughout the last quarter and walked away with tenth victory of this season.
