Connecticut Sun’s Tina Charles named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week
Connecticut Sun’s Tina Charles has been named by the league as the Eastern Conference player of the week for the regular season games played from Monday, August 1 through Sunday, August 7.
The 22-year-old centre finished the week as the league leader with 13.3 rebounds per game. She was ranked fifth among leaders in scoring with 20.3 points per game and in blocks (1.45 bpg), while guiding Connecticut to a 2-1 week.
The two-time WNBA All-Star also headed the league with 38.3 minutes per game during the week and pounded a double-double every time she grasped the court.
In the 2011 season so far, Charles is averaging 18.1 points, 10.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. This marks Charles’ third Player of the Week honour so far in this season and the fourth in her career. Seimone Augustus of the
Minnesota Lynx received the honour from the Western Conference.

Game-high 20 points vs. Los Angeles Sparks
Charles opened the week with her fourth consecutive double-double. The player scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Connecticut defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 79-70 at Staples Center enroute to their third straight
victory.
Charles, who recently earned her first All-Star selection, shot 8 for 12 from the field and 4 for 6 from free throw line. With her team trailing by five points at halftime, Charles turned the heat on erupted with 13 points, including
seven in the final period.
18-point spurt vs. Seattle Storm
The 6ft-4in centre racked up 18 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, dished out three assists, stole the ball twice and blocked two shots in an 81-79 defeat to Seattle Storm at Key Arena. It was the fifth consecutive double-double
and 13th overall of the season for Charles. The reigning WNBA rookie of the year went 8 for 17 from the floor in more than 37 minutes of action on the night.
Game-winning jumper vs. Phoenix Mercury
In the last game of the week, Charles made a 12-footer with just 5 ticks to go in overtime as Connecticut squeaked out a 96-95 victory over Phoenix Mercury at US Airways Center. Charles finished the game with 23 points, on an 11-of-24
shooting, game-high 17 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
