Connecticut Suns hand out a crushing 97-55 loss to New York Liberty – WNBA Recap
On Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena, Connecticut Suns thrashed the New York Liberty 97-55 and handed them their worst loss in franchise history along with it.
Tina Charles led the way with 20 points and 8 rebounds for Suns who had a record lead 61-27 after the first half.
Five other players for the Suns finished the night off with double figure scores capping off a tremendous team performance for the home team. Among the starters, Allison Hightower chipped in with 12 points while Kara Lawson and
Asjha Jones contributed 10 points each.
Renee Montgomery was the second highest scorer on the night for Connecticut with 14 points off the bench. Mistie Mims came off the bench with 13 points on a 5-of-8 shooting from the field.
Throughout the night the Suns found it very easy to get past Liberty`s defence and had no trouble in converting possession to scores.
“I think on night's like this, it goes both ways,'' Lawson said. ``I'd like to think we were so awesome offensively, but clearly we expected it would be a little harder to crack their defense than it was tonight.”
In the early stages of the game, Liberty were able to offer some kind of resistance as they only trailed by 4 at the 2:51 mark of the first quarter. From that point on Connecticut shifted their offense into a whole new gear by
putting together a 19-0 run and with it established a firm grip over the game.
They went on to dominate the proceedings for the remaining time of the first half and held a huge 34 point lead at the break.
With the momentum on their side, Suns went on to continue in similar fashion by opening the second half with a 13-6 run to hold a huge 41 point lead. Connecticut held their advantage for most of the remaining time and only let
their foot off the pedal in the finishing stages of the game.
Essence Carson was the only player for New York who crossed the double digit mark in the game with 14 points whereas the rest of the team did not manage to put up more than 7 point individually.
Liberty`s leading scorer for the season Cappie Pondexter only had 6 points to her name, all of which came in the second half which left her frustrated after the game.
"It was embarrassing, frustrating,'' Pondexter said. “We just got a lot of work to do, a lot of soul-searching, trying to figure this thing out before it sinks. ... I know when I'm not aggressive, this team is not good, and it's
my fault. I wasn't being as aggressive as I needed to be.''
Along with holding a huge advantage in the scoring department, Connecticut were also able to outrebound Liberty 36 to 27, 11 of their rebounds came on the offensive end, putting an exclamation mark on the performance after a good
night at work.
