  1. Stamford is basically the next town along I-95 from Old Greenwich. 5 minutes on I-95.

If you're only in the area for a weekend, and you're arriving on Saturday, then you don't have enough time for both Mystic Aquarium (and the Mystic Shopping Village) and Mystic Seaport. The Seaport alone can take a full day to properly enjoy.

Instead, stay closer to Old Greenwich. Take in the Peabody Museum in New Haven. Visit the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport. Check the Sound Tigers hockey schedule (feeder team for the NY Islanders) at the Arena at Harbor Yard, also in Bridgeport. If your visit is next month, check out the Bridgeport Bluefish baseball team.

Stop in at Stew Leonard's (World's Largest Dairy Store) in Norwalk. Have a few samples. The take-out foodbar is one of the best you'll ever see.

There are two outlet malls; one in Westbrook and one in Clinton. They are about 45 minutes north on I-95; or only about 20 minutes from the New Haven.

Plan on staying closer to Mystic if you want to visit the attractions there. It's about 90 minutes from Old Greenwich; you'll lose a good portion of your day just driving.

  2. hartford is a good area,,not familiar with the other areas,,

  3. Greenwich area is one of the nicest in state.  I am not too familiar with Hartford but, Mystic is absolutely beautiful to visit.  Great restaurants, Mystic Seaport and so forth are it's highlights.  Mystic is probably about 45 minutes to an hour away, depending on the traffic.  If you are driving into Ct for the weekend from the NYC area, just know that Friday p.m. is heavy traffic northbound (via I-95) and Sunday, southbound.  Good luck with your travels!!!

  4. Stamford's quite close to Old Greenwich, it's about a fifteen minute drive, I think? Hartford's farther, and the city's also not really worth going to I might add... It's about an hour and a half from Greenwich/Stamford area.

However, there is actually a good amount of pastoral, New Englandy sites in Hartford county! If you travel along route 66 you're bound to see some farms, old stone walls, old libraries, that kind of thing. Fairfield County (where Stamford and all that is) is gorgeous in some areas but not quite so remote.

Mystic Aquarium and all that is another hour and forty five minutes away too, along the coast (Hartford is more mid-state). So you'll probably have to choose. Personally, I'd stay along the coast if you're going to be here! It's starting to be rather lovely with the onset of spring.

  5. By Connecticut standards Stamford is close to Greenwich, Hartford is a medium drive, and Mystic is a long drive (about 1 1/2 hours up I-95).  Of course, if you're from Texas it will all seem pretty close.

As for 'nice' - it depends on what you like.  I find most of Fairfield County to be uptight and stuffy, but that's me.  In Mystic you have two major attractions, Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Aquarium.

  6. Mystic is a great area to visit...lots of history and some great local places for seafood.  Take a look at Custy's buffet as well in that area.
