Connecting 2 optical devices to an amp with only 1 optical Input?

Hi there, my problem is this :

I have Sky HD and a PS3, I want to be able to connect both of them to my Sony DVD player which is an amp and has 5.1 speakers also, which has only one optical input.

I have been searching the internet and have found optical switch boxes that will work, but I dont want to have to get up and flick the switch every time I want to switch between watching SkyHD and my PS3.

I've seen optical splitter boxes that take an optical signal in and send it out through 2 optical outs, would that work in reverse to take both my optical inputs and send them to the optical in on my Sony DVD player / surround sound amp? So if I had just either Sky or my PS3 switched on, the audio would be sent to my DVD player.

Or does anyone know of an optical splitter box that comes with a remote to switch between the sources??

Thanks for any help guys

  1. Because of the nature of the connection you will need one of the automatic input selectors as others have mentioned. Or you could , if you have the right digital coax connection on the receiver hook it up to that input. You may need to change cables on the Sky receiver or use a transcoder device then hook up to the receiver.

  2. The link I will give you will work with your set-up.

  3. Here you are ... but not exactly cheap. The first has a remote, the second -- $50 cheaper -- accepts remote codes (you supply the remote), and the third autoswitches to the active source.
