Connecting 2 routers together?

Ok i am up at a lake and i finally got internet service here. They came and hooked it up and gave me the router to hook it up with. This is a comtrend wireless adsl2+ CT-5361T router. It is dsl connection. Well i also have a linksys wrt54gs wireless router too. I want to make this my primary router, but the connection up here is ran through a phone line. There is not a phone jack on the back of the linksys. When i install the linksys router it shows everything is hooked up fine but when i restart my computer it shows that the connection is through the modem(comtrend router) to the computer and it has a yellow exclamation point by router. I have to keep reinstalling the software for the router to show up. How can i make my linksys the primary router without going through all this headache trouble ive been through for the past week?

help would mean so much

thanks

  1. I've done something similar in the past. The basic hitch is that only one of the routers can be running the DHCP server, which hands out IP addresses on your LAN. I'm pretty sure it has to be the comtrend, since this apparently must be a combo modem and router.

Set a different IP address on each router, e.g. 192.168.1.1 on the comtrend and 192.168.1.2 on the linksys. On the linksys, assign the comtrend as the gateway.

Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with the comtrend. It seems like you're unnecessarily complicating things.

  2. The best fix is to use the Comtrend, it has the  ADSL modem in it which your WRT54 does not so you can't make the Linksys the "Prime" router, it won't connect (ever!).

Just log in to the Comtrend and set the XBOX units local IP address as the DMZ.  That will OPEN EVERYTHING! and you can use xbox360 without any problem.

You can just forward ports 88 (UDP),  port 3074 (UDP and TCPiP) to the xbox IP but that is more work and may still only give moderate Nat.  Just put the xbox in the DMZ it will be working in minutes. Be sure and check that the firewall allows XBOX.

PS - the Comtrend actually is a great router

  3. I don't know, but i do know it isn't an easy thing to do. I tried doing a similar thing with two d-link routers, and even the highest level tech support people couldn't figure it out. I had to get an IT systems administrator come to my house. and it took him a while too.

I think its something related to mac addresses.

  4. Their equipment is not a router.  It's a modem.  You can not remove it.  Yours is a router.  You can hook yours in between your computer and the modem.

Yours works with theirs, not instead of it.
