Connecting Classic iPod (80G) to CD Player

Question

When I connect my iPod to my Philips CD player using the USB cable I am unable to navigate through my iPod music on the iPod screen. Instead, the CD player shows an unusual display and I have to control the music from there rather than through the iPod.

Because the CD player display is weird -looking and doesn't show the names of the songs being played I am unable to find the song I want or even the album I want. I'm pressing buttons blindly hoping to find a good song.

Any ideas?
