Connecting DVDR through cable box to the tv?

I am trying to connect my dvd recorder through my cable box to my tv and I am having problems with this. Do I need my RF modulator? Also if anyone could give me complete step by step instructions I would totally appreciate it. :-)

  1. It should be the other way around instead

    Connect your cable box to the DVDR's input. Then the output of the DVDR to the TV input.

    You will have to turn ON the DVDR everytime you watch your TV.
