Connecting a gas dryer?

If the dryer is being disconnected on Thursday, and a new dryer connected on Saturday - does the gas line have to be capped if we are shutting the gas off?

If yes, what do you cap it with?

Thanks!

  1. U should have a shut-off valve there.  Why do u need it cap,  if only for a few days?  If u don't have any kids to mess with the valve.  It's OK, to not bother to cap it.

  2. When you shut the gas off at the meter then all the gas appliances in the house will need relighting when you turn it back on.

Some appliances have a shut off hand valve in their on dedicated gas line just behind the dryer. If not you will have to do as you say and turn off the gas...at the meter. If you have other gas appliances such as a gas water heater you will be with out hot water till you turn the meter back on. So... turn off the meter, put a cap on the pipe which is stubbed up for the dryer. You may have to disconnect the connector and remove it then cap with a black iron pipe cap of the size threads you have available. Then you can relight your water heater till you dryer is installed, at which time you will have to turn it off at the meter again, tie in the dryer line. Be sure to use gas leak detector to check your fitting connections. (Bubble solution on the joints) and fittings.

  3. the shut off valve will suffice. However for safety it is a good idea to also put a cap on it. One more thing. It s always a good idea to also replace the flex hose with a new one.

After it is installed you may also call the gas company for a free inspection of the installation. They will also put a ''sniffer'' on everything to insure that there are no gas leaks anywhere.

  4. cap with a 3/4" or 1/2" black pipe cap only do not use a plug or galvanize coated pipe fitting[ not code]

  5. Plugging or capping is code for a reason.  If somehow the valve got turned on it would make for a real bad day.

  6. no, the appliance has a cut off valve near the end of the pipe that connects to the dryer.....just cut the valve off and dont cap it.....
