Connecting a router question?

I replaced my old router with a new one. Both linksys, just a new model. First, I uninstalled the old router's software, and disconnected it. Following the instructions of my new router, I put in the included disk, figuring that I needed to install a program. I clicked start setup, next, "I accept", all that c**p... then the program said, "testing connection" since I already dismantled my wireless connection, it couldn't connect, and would not let me proceed. Eventually, I just hooked up the router without the software and it works fine. I tried to run the software after but it could not function with a wireless connection. I am wondering if the software included is just for help connecting the router itself, or is it needed to install a compatible program?

It will only try to help you connect to the router, no software needed. So did you say you can connect to the router wirelessly now? Is this an ADSL router that you use to connect to the internet? If you are connected wirelessly now but still need to setup the router or change settings, and your using windows xp (I can't remember vista's network connections path off the top of my head), go to start / control panel / network connections, double click the wireless connection icon, click the support tab at the top, and note what the gateway adress is. open your internet browser and in the address bar put in http:// and then the gateway address you noted earlier. (eg: "http://192.168.0.1" if thats what the address was. Thats without the quotes). That will log you into the router to change settings and check its status.

If it is wireless, the software is basically just a help guide.

Normally a new router should be fine to just connect and go. I think the cd that comes along is a wizard type to do settings if you don't know what to change if you log in to your router and do the settings.
