Connecting external batteries to a ups?

can i connect a 12v, 170a deep cycle battery to an APC back-ups 600?

  1. You can connect it as long as the required battery voltage is 12 volts.  The bigger question is can the UPS charge the battery.  If the UPS was designed for a fairly small battery it might not be able to recharge one that has several times more capacity.  At least not is any reasonable length of time.  What is the charging current the UPS provides?  It should provide at least 5 amps and have overcharge protection.
