  1. ratpac7's advice is excellent but I do want to add one thing - in traveling to/from Canada, it is now required that you have a valid passport.  That will be a requirement before you board the train in NY Penn (you will hear announcements in the station before the train arrives) to have it inspected at the Amtrak customer service office.

  2. They do have a rail stop at Newark. So you have to go to the amtrak site to see if they then connect to Toronto. Great question.

If there is a connection, it could be a long wait. You want want to go to Newark Penn Station and then at least there is a city with some restaurants and a museum to help you pass the time on this trip

  3. Unlike the other two answers to this question already give, which are extremely vague, I can give you a straight up answer; take any NJ Transit or Amtrak train stopping at the Newark Airport station to New York Penn.  From there, you must board the Maple Leaf, which is the only train that goes to Toronto direct from New York Penn.  Unfortunately, there is only one Maple Leaf per day, and it happens to leave at 7:15 in the morning every day.  If that is too early for you, I strongly suggest taking an Empire Service train from New York Penn to Niagara Falls (there are three of them, all leaving in late morning and early afternoon), and then taking VIA (the Canadian version of Amtrak) to Toronto.  Other than that, if nothing else works, you might have to fly.  I hope this has been helpful for you.  Good luck with your travels.

  4. Best thing to do is look on amtrak website, at a glance it looks like you will need to get 2 trains

    1)   Newark Int. Airport to New York (Penn)

    2)  New York (Penn) to Toronto
