  1. You need to plug the other end of the cable into your router, the wired connection will come immediately. It means carrying your laptop to wherever your router is. Assuming that you're ultimately trying to establish a wireless connection that is, you need a router if you don't have one. Once the cable has established a wired connection you can configure your wireless settings and you're all ready to go.

Ethernet or "network" cables are primarily for configuring wireless connections between router and pc. Just establish a wired connection with your modem and filters the old-fashioned way if you don't want wireless.

  2. you have to have your LAN connection enabled.

go to Start,Control Panel,Network Connections...U must see LAN there..right click on it and choose ENABLE..

if it is already enabled but u cant still connect, right click on the icon again, choose Properties and see if the device is working..

If you cant see LAN connection on Network Connections..You must set it up..

are u using xp or vista?

  3. just get a router. they're not expensive and very helpful.

  4. It is a problem with your laptop settings.

  5. get a router, a wireless router wouldnt need a cable if your laptops configured for wireless network...

  6. Check into Internet Settings and choose "This computer connects to the internet through another computer".

  7. you need to setup a network on the laptop. just go to control panel and choose network connections and follow instructions. remember with HS Internet connection only one Ethernet cable works at a time.

  8. 1st right/alternate click on my computer, select manage, click on device manager, look at or expand network interface and see if there is a red x or yellow exclamation mark. Red x means device is disable and you need to right/alternate click and select enable. This will enable the device and plugged cable will acquire a valid IP address from your router. yellow exclamation mark means the device is installed/recognized but needs driver update and you will right/alternate click and update the driver if you have the driver in CD or another media. If you don't have the driver run windows update by click Tools from internet explorer and select windows update. You may be lucky windows has update for the hardware driver. If not go to the support section of manufacturer's website of your PC, look for the PC model and download the driver. If none of  marks exist in the device manager follow the last step by going to the PC maker's site. The device has not been installed and not recognized although physically exist. Bye the way, why don't you just get a wireless router, set it up, give your laptop wings and make ur laptop mobile around the house. Good luck
