is there a way to connect your modem and cable box in the same room if you only have 1 cable outlet in your wall?

Yes there is. Buy a two way splitter and connect the cable from the wall to the splitter input and the cables to the box and modem to the two outputs.

If you notice any performance issues, the cable power may be too low, in which case, buy either an amplified splitter or a separate amplifier to place in front of the splitter, between the wall connection and the splitter.
