Connecting phone adapter to phone?

Question

On their installation instructions, it tells me to connect a phone to a phone line to their adapter. Does that mean I have to connect all the phones in my house to the adapter? If I do this, it means I have to run very long wires up the stairs and across the ground over several yards to get to the phone adapter. Is it possible to connect a phone line from the phone adapter to a phone jack and all phones connected to a phone jack can have service?
