Question:

Connecting speakers to a PS3 - optical output?

Hi,

If I buy a monitor that has no speakers, and connect my PS3 to it using an HDMI cable, how can I connect speakers to it?

Will I be able to use the left and right (white and red) RCA cables from the AV Multi socket, or will the PS3 not output from the HDMI and AV Multi sockets at the same time?

How can I use the digital optical output to connect to speakers? Does it require a seperate amplifier? Does it carry a 5.1 signal?

I do not especially care about surround sound. All I really want is a 2 or 2.1 speaker setup.

Thank for your help in advance.

  1. I don't believe you can connect your PS3 directly to your speakers. You will need a receiver/amp and will have to change the settings in your PS3 to digital optical and check 2.1 or 5.1 which ever you want. Also, as for the HDMI and AV, I think you will only be able to output from one at a time - depending on the settings you choose.
