I recently connected my laptop to my tv using a vga cable, the picture is fine but for some reason i cant get the sound to work. I know its a seperate cable, i've got a 3.5mm stereo Y cable (red & white plugs) but when i connect it to the back of my tv i get no sound (unless i unplug it and get sound from laptop). Is it a different audio cable i need? or do i have set my laptop/tv up to send/receive sound? my tv is a samsung 40"

  1. You mention that you try connecting the audio to your TV. Make sure that you are connecting it to an audio input in your TV, not an output. Most TV's only have an audio output.

  2. You have the correct cable, but it could be hooked up wrong. It must be connected to the audio output on your laptop, not the mic input or the line input, and it must go to the set of audio inputs on your TV that is associated with the VGA input. There are several sets of audio inputs on your TV and you may have hooked the cable to the wrong ones.

So check both ends of your cable and be sure it is hooked up properly.

  3. you probably need to go to your sound settings and set them to an external speaker.
